Two Gerbils Can Equal a Litter--Every Month!

Breeding gerbils can be an exciting part of owning these little pets, but if you're not careful, you can be overrun quickly, as these little guys can breed every single month. Here's what you need to know about breeding a gerbil pair.

Choosing a Breeding Pair

If you accidentally bought a boy/girl set, then you can't do much about choosing your breeding pair. However, if you're going to breed these pets on purpose for your own pleasure or to sell, choose the pair wisely. First, consider buying from a breeder to avoid the problem of inbred and untamed animals. Breeders will also be more adept at discerning the gender of these critters. Then, ask the breeder how the colors of your pets will affect the color of the babies. Finally, choose a healthy gerbil pair with good temperaments.

Setting Up a Breeding Tank

Set up a 10 or 20-gallon breeding tank. Stock it with highly nutritious gerbil food, plenty of water, and ample bedding. The breeding pair will need some additional vitamins and fat during the breeding stage, so gerbil treats are allowed and encouraged. Be sure to change the bedding a few days before you expect the babies, so you can leave it untouched when they're tiny and fragile.

You'll also need a separate tank to serve as a nursery when the babies are born. Babies should be placed in the nursery tank when they're six weeks old, and boy and girl babies should be separated at eight weeks to prevent inbreeding.

Keeping Mom and Dad Company

Gerbils can breed every single month, so to prevent this, keep mom and dad separated except when you want them to breed. Gerbils like to be around each other, so you should keep a male and female pup from your first litter to serve as tank mates for the parents. Ensure you do not breed siblings or siblings with their parents to avoid problems associated with inbreeding.
